Natural gases are mixtures of saturated hydrocarbons with different boiling points. The composition ranges from methane as the main component up to pentanes. In addition, natural gases often contain higher unsaturated hydrocarbon compounds with a highly complex phase behaviour. To avoid an explicit definition of these compounds, they are generically summed up under the term C6+. Beside these hydrocarbon compounds, nitrogen and carbon dioxide are typical impurities. Hydrogen sulphide and carbonyl sulphide as well as mercaptans are further components that are frequently found in different concentrations. Natural gases containing hydrogen sulphide are generally called sour gases, gases without this component are defined as sweet gases. In addition, natural gas resources that contain mercury in varying concentrations exist worldwide. In the reservoir, natural gas is found with chloride-containing water, the so-called reservoir water. Therefore, when natural gas is extracted, it is saturated with water corresponding to the partial pressure.

Conditioning processes

The adjustment of natural gas compositions, which widely vary, primarily three industrial processes have proven themselves:
  • The absorption process with triethylene glycol as a drying agent for the adjustment of the H2O-dew point.
  • The adsorption process, for the simultaneous adjustment of the H2O- and the hydrocarbons-dew point. Zeolites (molecular sieves) or silica gel are used as basis for the adsorbent.
  • The condensation process is the process that competes with the adsorption process. In the LTS- (low temperature separation) or the CFP-design (cold fractionation plant), mercury is simultaneously extracted.

The recovery of light hydrocarbons refers to the removal of ethane, propane, butane and heavier hydrocarbons from the gas stream. Natural gas liquids (NGL) is the general term for liquids extracted from the natural gas stream (ethane and heavier products) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is the term used to refer to extracted liquids where the main components are propane, n-butane and iso-butane. Depending on the requirement, hydrocarbon dew point control packages or cryogenic plants can be used to extract NGL from gas streams. To extract individual components from the NGL, fractionation will typically be required.

Oil Processing

In contrast to natural gas production, in crude oil production, the first step is merely to process it for transportation. While natural gas is usually processed to specification on site and then fed directly into the transfer line to the end customer systems, the second step of the oil treatment takes place in a refinery because of the complexity and quantity of the end products.

The main tasks of the systems at the source are:

  • The separation of oil from the associated gas and produced water. This separation is done in 3-phase separators or centrifuges.
  • The secondary separation of the oil-water emulsion, combined in many cases with the desalting of the crude oil.
  • Treatment of the bound gases, which can be either compressed or processed and the energy used to produce electricity and generate heat. Here, the accumulated gas volumes determine the method of treatment and attention is paid to achieving the lowest possible emissions.
  • Preparation and insertion of salt water into the reservoir, in which the processes used are often very complex and not yet established as state of the art. The operators rely on innovative technologies in order to meet the more stringent demands of the water quality requirements.

Often for the first production cycle, mobile test systems are used to analyse the quality and to define the necessary processing steps.

The compact and modular design of these types of systems are flexible with regard to preparation and processing techniques and can then be transported to another location.

Raw gas often cannot be used to fuel the gas engines or gas turbines driving pipeline compressors due to poor quality. Significant concentrations of H2S and/or C3+ will cause corrosion and carbon build-up in the gas engine. CO2 and nitrogen will lower the BTU value. Any of these impurities can compromise engine operation, increase downtime or at a minimum put emissions out of compliance. Their presence in the raw gas can even render the gas unusable as fuel so expensive diesel has to be trucked in. EnerProcess is also a manufacturer and supplier of single-product cryogenic oxygen plants and cryogenic nitrogen plants. Enerprocess air separation plants, nitrogen gas plants and oxygen gas plants can be supplied with stand-alone or fully integrated liquefier units to produce large quantities of liquid nitrogen and liquid oxygen for in-plant use and for bulk liquid products distribution.

Separation Packages

An oil/gas separator is a pressure vessel used for separating a well stream into gaseous and liquid components. Based on the vessel configurations, the oil/gas separators can be divided into horizontal, vertical, or spherical separators. In teams of fluids to be separated, the oil/gas separators can be grouped into gas/liquid two-phase separator or oil/gas/water three-phase separator. To meet process requirements, the oil/gas separators are normally designed in stages, in which the first stage separator is used for preliminary phase separation, while the second and third stage separator are applied for further treatment of each individual phase (gas, oil and water). Depending on a specific application, oil/gas separators are also called deliquilizer or degasser. The deliquilizers are used to remove dispersed droplets from a bulk gas stream; while the degassers are designed to remove contaminated gas bubbles from the bulk liquid stream.

The Chemical Injection Package serves the purpose of injecting a precise and accurate amount of chemicals into a system with the required back pressure, either continuously or intermittently.

The purpose of injecting the chemicals into a system is to protect the mechanical integrity of the system from accelerated corrosion and prevent scale formation. The aim is also to control hydrate formation, prevent oxygen induced corrosion, emulsion breaker for rapid and sharp separation of water from oil, reduce wax formation, water treatment, Odorization, foam control etc.

Heater Packages

Heater Packages

EnerProcess supplies a large array of modular heater treater packages capable of treating low API crude.

The heating section consists of fire tubes which are used to heat the produced fluids to the appropriate treating temperature. The produced fluids enter above the fire tubes and are directed downwards until they are distributed in the heating section. Associated gas leaves the vessels through a back pressure controller valve and the free water is removed from the bottom of the vessel. The heating process fluid then passes through the surge section and into the coalescing section of the treater. The oil passes through the coalescers where it is removed at the top as treated oil. The treated water is removed from the bottom of the treater.
